We have power and lights! ⚡️💡

Big thanks to my brother @oclincaccj for helping us wire up the barn with power, mounting shop lights, and hanging fans for us! We can actually see what we're doing in here now lol.

In addition to lights, we've installed multiple outlets around the barn to help us access power for our brooders and heat lamps/plates.

Another "vision-coming-to-life" moment! 🙌

Still working on ripping down these boards! 🪵

I'm only about halfway through and we already have enough 2x2s to build 5-6 movable chicken shelters for the spring.

Once all these boards cut, we're going to start building our 7 shelters we plan to start with. We've put together some awesome design plans we'll be working from, stay tuned for future how-to videos and detailed instructions on how to build them yourself! 🎬

One of the big influences on our decision to start this farm was witnessing the cracks form in our nation's food chain during COVID-19.

We all have our different stories about grocery stores running low on supply, or hoarders ransacking the local Costco and leaving empty pallets. I knew from watching the publics reaction to natural disasters that food and basic necessities were always the first to go in a scary situation. What we didn't know was how long it would take for the food system to catch back up after millions of people were told to stay home and quarantine.

Even when the truck drivers kept driving, the grocery store had to have employees working to unload the truck.

Even if the farmer kept raising chicken, the processing plant had to have worker on shift to slaughter and pack the product.

Different parts of the chain continued working fine, while other had no contingencies for an event like this. The result was an astounding wake-up for us on just how fragile this food system had become. Of course, this system was originally designed so food could reach as many possible. But with so many links in the chain, the room for error was extremely slim.

It was during this time that we leaned heavily on our neighbors who had a small backyard flock of chicken. Like the rest of the nation, we realized the tremendous value of food growing just walking distance from our house. Even though it was just a breakfast item for us, having access to a food chain with so few links opened our eyes to the security it provided against unexpected complications.

Maybe you don't care about "pasture raised chicken" or "unwashed eggs".

That's fine.

But no one want's their family to go hungry. And if our nation of comfort and convenience is thrust into a world war, another pandemic, or some sort of wild solar flare...we won't be able to rely on the comfort and convenience of Uber Eats anymore.

We all need individual control over what we put in our stomach.

We all need the shortest access to food possible.

We all need to know a farmer.
